6th Annual Folsom Community Service Day

Military Care Packages Project - September 21, 2019

For the 6th year in a row, Rolling Hills Blue Star Moms has participated in the Folsom Community Service Day, a city wide volunteerism day with over 3000 Folsom residents and friends completing more than 70 community service projects throughout the city of Folsom.

We prepared for our community service day project, "Care Packages for Military", on Friday, September 20 by gathering all the donations that were received through KCRA/Red Cross Operation Care Package, Marshall Health, Optum 360, and Blue Shield all held donations drives, for the 6th year in a row, Benevento Chiropractic held a month long donation drive, Bed, Bath and Beyond in Folsom Cashier Troop Chase Donation Drive, City of Folsom residents that donated at the Annual One Day Drive Through Donation Day held at the Steve Miklos Aquatic Center and many individual donors.  This year, the Folsom Sea Otters and El Dorado Hills TAZ swim teams held a socks challenge, where hundreds of pairs of socks were received!

Once all the donations were at the  Folsom Veterans Hall, we sorted, arranged and set up the assembly line!   It took us over 6 hours to get everything set up because of so many donations, however, this was not such a terrible problem to have!

The day of the pack, started at 8 am, with over 80 volunteers coming to pack 800 care packages!  In just over 3 hours, we filled, sealed and loaded (824) care packages into carts and sent them to the post office.  The care packages are on their way to deployed service members all over the world.  We have to send a HUGE thank you to the City of Folsom Firefighters that dropped by to load the care packages and do most of the heavy lifting!

Special thanks to the City of Folsom, Christine Brainerd, Folsom Commutations Manager/organizer of the FCSD, Intel Coproration, and Dignity Health for their huge support of our project, including the donation to cover most of the $12,000 postage cost to mail the care packages; and to the Girl and Boy Scouts that came out to volunteer!  Thank you to all the organizations for their generosity and continued support of our organization.

Also, thanks go out to Folsom's local Chapters of the Military Order of the Purple Heart and Marine Corps Devil Dogs for altering their meeting schedule for the day to give us the space at the Folsom Veterans Hall to complete the pack!

Finally, thank you to the many, many volunteers that made this the 6th successful care packaging event; we couldn't do what we do without you!   Cheers to another successful Folsom Community Service Day!
